Monica Lewinsky: The Epidemic | A painstakingly honest portrayal of Cyberbullying

We may be the most intelligent species on the planet but there’s still a lot that we fail to comprehend. For instance, we’re often guilty of overlooking atrocities that happen under our nose. In the current digital era, Cyberbullying is one such horror. In fact, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to call it an epidemic. After all, the anguish that a cyber bullying-victim goes through is not limited to the mind. The physiological consequences of facing consistent distress aren’t trivial either. Monica Lewinsky, a legendary social activist, elucidates the same in an interactive campaign. Titled The Epidemic, the digital work uses the power of subversion to make its impact.

Thanks to BBDO, the campaign displays impeccable visual finesse. It takes viewers through the anecdotal experience of a teenage girl. At first, she seems to be developing some sort of illness. However, after the first viewing, the interactive portion of the campaign starts. Viewers enter their phone numbers and watch the ad again. But, the second viewing reveals another hidden perspective. It allows onlookers to become privy to the protagonist’s phone messages. Thus, what first appears to be a COVID-19 related case turns into a tale of Cyberbullying.

All in all, we are beyond impressed by the creativity on display. But, most importantly, we stand in awe of the social change that Monica Lewinsky is trying to create.
