In the colorful world of Brazilian football, where passion runs deeper than the Amazon River and excitement soars higher than a goal-scoring free kick, there’s a tale of beer and innovation that adds a new twist to the beautiful game.

For years, the marriage of beer and Brazilian football has been as shaky as a striker’s nerves during a penalty shootout. The hallowed stadiums had long banned the sale of alcohol within their hallowed walls, and jersey sponsorship deals with boozy brands were offside. But amidst this prohibition, a bold player emerged: AB InBev’s very own Brahma, a major sponsor in the world of Brazilian football. Brahma needed a game-changing strategy to make its presence felt on the pitch, all while subtly conveying its two key product attributes: smoothness and foam.

Enter the realm of football traditions, where legendary players like David Beckham once flaunted iconic hairstyles that sparked a wildfire of copycat cuts among players and fans alike. Think Beckham’s mohawk and cornrows, or Ronaldinho’s signature headband. It’s a world where the extraordinary becomes a trend, where individualism meets fandom. And it’s precisely within this vibrant football culture that Brahma decided to make its mark.

In a creative collaboration with São Paulo-based agency Africa, Brahma introduced a revolutionary concept: the “Foamy Haircut.” Crafted in partnership with Ariel Franco, a renowned Brazilian barber famous for his iconic styling, the Foamy Haircut was designed to mimic a frothy glass of Brahma beer – a golden sea below, crowned with a snowy white foam on top. This audacious move sparked to life on July 10, 2021, during a thrilling match between São Paulo FC and Bahia, when left-back Reinaldo Manoel da Silva, affectionately known as Reinaldo, took to the pitch sporting the Foamy Haircut.

The buzz was instantaneous, and Brahma seized the moment. The following day, they unveiled a captivating spot that showcased the creative process of Franco and Reinaldo crafting this distinctive look. Like wildfire, the Foamy Haircut swept through the Brazilian football landscape, finding its place on the heads of numerous other footballers, including Chelsea FC’s Thiago Silva and Jorginho during their UEFA Super Cup victory, pundits, and devoted fans alike.

Marina Raats, Brahma’s marketing manager, aptly summarized the phenomenon: “Brahma’s smoothness is such that it goes beyond beer and goes into the players’ heads.” In a press release, she continued, “Among so many things, the hair of male and female players is something iconic within soccer. Many athletes become idols and are recognized, not only for what they present on the field but also for their looks. So, in an unusual way, we decided to create the cut that is dictating fashion this decade, all this to bring Brahmoothness to people in a different way.”

The results spoke volumes. According to the agency, within just two weeks of its launch, the Foamy Haircut not only scored but exceeded Brahma’s annual targets for mentions and engagement, with a staggering 264,288 mentions, 91% of which were generated organically.

In the grand theater of Brazilian football, where legends are born, and innovation knows no bounds, Brahma’s Foamy Haircut became more than a style statement—it was a testament to the power of creativity and a reminder that even the most unexpected partnerships can lead to a winning goal. Cheers to the fusion of football, beer, and the Foamy Haircut—an unforgettable chapter in the saga of the beautiful game.
