Immunity Charm – The immunization history of the child, worn by the child
Vaccination is critical for developing the immune system. In Afghanistan, only 50% of the population is vaccinated. Doctors face a lack of immunization history because parents do not maintain vaccination records, the country has many remote areas, and cultural biases exist against the process. McCann needed to explain to the people of Afghanistan the importance of immunization and help children receive the proper care. The country needed a low-tech and straightforward solution. The Immunity Charm is a simple, color-coded beaded bracelet rooted in the Afghan tradition of children wearing evil eye bracelets. The bracelet allowed McCann to initiate conversations about immunizations, counter traditional biases, and create a process that requires no reading or writing for parents. Each bead is color-coded for a specific vaccine. The Immunity Charm helped doctors make enthusiasm about immunization, and the Government has extended the program to other provinces, where the Immunity Charm can save thousands of lives.
