The Infinite Sprint – German sprinter and Olympic champion Alexandra Burghardt’s 22-year career…

The Infinite Sprint – German sprinter and Olympic champion Alexandra Burghardt’s 22-year career journey is at the heart of film celebrating resilience as a key quality for athletes

The distance between dream and reality is perseverance
Just how much endurance does a sprinter need? The answer is: a lot more than you think. A new campaign by Swiss sportswear company, On, aims to reframe sport’s single-minded focus on winning – by highlighting perseverance as an equally essential quality for athletes. The Infinite Sprint campaign is led by a 171 second film, The Infinite Sprint, which paints an intimate portrait of German sprinter Alexandra Burghardt (29) and her 22-year-long journey to becoming a national champion – and is released just as the athlete celebrates another winning performance in the 200m race at the 2023 German Athletics Championships in Kassel.

Centred on the surprising message (for a sports brand) that winning isn’t everything, the film is a powerful reminder that mental strength and a resilient attitude are just as important as crossing the finish line first – whether you’re a professional, aspiring runner or running as a hobby or way of keeping fit.

Filmed in Burghardt’s hometown of Altötting, Germany, and featuring original archive moments from the very beginning of her career, the film portrays Burghardt’s journey with both a sense of childlike wonder and unwavering willpower. It juxtaposes vignettes of Burghardt’s gruelling training schedule with fictional scenes of a young girl of a similar age to Burghardt when she first set out to pursue her dream of becoming a professional sprinter and making it to the Olympics. The evocative visuals are overlaid by Burghardt narrating the challenges of her 22-year-long journey to become a champion – concluding with her powerful realisation that ‘The distance between dream and reality is perseverance – and with every day, this distance gets a little shorter, until the two meet.’

Gessica Giulini, On Sports Marketing Lead and producer of the film, says: “This is not meant to be a documentary. We were aiming to create a content piece with a narrative arc and personal insight into athletic life beyond the common “zero to hero”-story. We want to inspire people from all walks of life to connect with Alexandra’s story, to take heart and realize that, even though it might take longer than you think if you persevere, you can reach your goals. The most important thing is not to give up but to Dream On.”

Written by Los Angeles-based creative director Oliver DeVitre and shot by award-winning director and editor Mischa Meyer, The Infinite Sprint is a new style of content film, subverting the traditional sports documentary format with fictional elements in order to connect to a wider audience. The campaign was created by On in collaboration with Oliver de VeVitre’s transatlantic creative agency Gold for Cash Inc. and produced through Akkurat production company in Berlin.

The Infinite Sprint represents a new twist on a traditional format – showcasing the human behind the athlete in an authentic and unfiltered manner, yet also using a script and direction that casts a spotlight on the mental strength needed to make the necessary sacrifices, to believe in oneself despite all setbacks, and, most of all, to never give up. Stylistically, the film is carefully crafted to convey both the intensity and grace of Alexandra’s sprinting prowess and to let original footage taken from Burghardt family’s VHS tape archive from her childhood. Playing with time in different ways was the guiding principle for the use of different cameras, speed and angles – a high-speed drone typically used for capturing motorsport action was needed to capture the shots of her sprinting because she was too fast for a standard drone to keep up with.

Oliver DeVitre fka Frank, Creative Director, Gold For Cash Inc. comments: “This project was an amazing opportunity to team up with an athlete whose story has not been told yet and give it the emotional scale it deserved. I loved turning Alexandra’s decades-long, split-second battle into something that hits you right in the feels, no matter how invested you are in the world of track and field.”

Director Mischa Meyer, Akkurat adds: “We all have childhood dreams. To realize them and to stay true to your dream throughout your life is one of the biggest personal challenges a person can face. Putting this personal journey of Alexandra into a film was what really excited me about this project. An athlete at their peak and showing how far they’ve come to get there. And it was an absolute pleasure to work with someone equally dedicated to their craft as myself.”

DeVitre and Meyer have been collaborating with On since 2020. Currently based in LA, DeVitre is a creative director who has worked for some of the world’s top advertising agencies including Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam and VCCP Berlin, where he created award-winning work for global brands including Nike, BMW Motorrad Global, Sky, Heineken and Converse.

Also based in Los Angeles, Meyer is a commercial, music video, and film director and editor originally from Stuttgart, Germany. Following success in the commercials world, his first short film, ANT, was selected in over 30 international film festivals as well as winning a Young Directors Award at Cannes 2021, while his latest short film, In The Shadow of Palms, recently premiered at Tribeca.

As the pandemic took hold and gyms shut down, online searches for ‘home…

As the pandemic took hold and gyms shut down, online searches for ‘home exercises’ rose by over 400%. Adidas wanted to leverage its impact as a leader in sports, to encourage people to stay healthy and keep up their fitness training at home by embodying the brand’s mantra of using sports to change lives for the better. Their goal was to empower athletes at all levels, whether that was collegiate athletes or high schoolers at home. They needed a content hub that would actively encourage the use of sports as an avenue for self-improvement and health. Their mission statement mirrored the goal of the campaign, “Informed by data. Driven by empathy”.

The idea Understanding that maintaining fitness impacts our mental health as well as our physical well-being, Adidas partnered with the Oliver Agency to create a series of videos utilizing professional athletes to help ‘train’ people at home. Not only would this strategy help improve lives during the pandemic, but would also connect athletes, as well as Adidas the brand, to millions of people in a new and impactful way. The idea was expanded to include storytelling as a way of getting across personal, impactful stories that would benefit viewers and promote an air of authenticity. For example, online searches of ‘home basketball drills’ doubled during the pandemic so Erica Wheeler and Amanda Zuhui B. of the WNBA joined Adidas to show how basketball players could mimic the training of the pros with just a ball and a court. Other professional athletes including NHL star Brock Boeser and professional tennis player Katrina Scott, among others, helped create 175 content pieces from 36 remote shoots. Videos walked viewers through short workouts that could power up there at-home training sessions and provide insight into the value of fitness.

After creating videos that included everything from rock climbing to running, and highlighting fitness on courts, tracks, fields, gyms, courses, and homes, their goal was easily reached. Adidas was able to garner over one million organic impressions, as well as improve its digital search rankings.

World Refugee Day is marked by a new documentary feature film portraying a…

World Refugee Day is marked by a new documentary feature film portraying a courageous journey – and a shattered Olympic dream – for the Athlete Refugee Team, representing 71 million displaced people worldwide.

Hungry Man’s Richard Bullock directs an emotional story of displacement, disappointment, sheer determination and hope in full-length documentary feature ‘RUN’

Run. That’s what refugees do. Their race starts with the sound of a gun, not a starter pistol. They run from burning villages and away from danger. Now, a group of athletes are running for the right to represent the 71 million displaced people in the world today.

To mark Saturday’s World Refugee Day, On – the Swiss sportswear company – has launched and co-produced an epic documentary feature to commemorate the millions of forcibly displaced people worldwide.

The story follows the legendary Kenyan athlete, Tegla Loroupe, as she mentors a group of talented athlete refugees on their arduous road to the (now cancelled) 2020 Tokyo Games. The Athlete Refugee Team has been captured in an emotionally charged documentary feature, considered to be the first production of its kind. A shattered dream, with an unexpected twist.

Filmed over three years, across eight countries in three different continents – ‘RUN’ is a story of the unwavering human spirit, empowerment and fearless bravery by a group of athlete refugees from the Congo, Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan. These athletes have been running from tribal gangs and civil war since they were children. Over the years, they have suffered trauma on an unimaginable scale and trained barefoot on dust-filled roads or in their backyards as residents of the UN refugee camps.

The 90-minute film is a co-production between On – the Swiss sportswear company – the Tegla Loroupe Foundation and Hungry Man Productions and it will be released on World Refugee Day (June 20) to commemorate the millions of forcibly displaced people worldwide. The film is now available to watch now on athleterefugeeteam.com

The film is directed by Richard Bullock of Hungry Man Productions, who took the lead in telling the story as he saw it, heard it, and through the words of the athletes featured. Bullock is a writer/director whose long-form films have run on the National Geographic Channel, Eurosport and the BBC. Before focusing on directing full time, Bullock built up an award-winning legacy in advertising as former Executive Creative Director at 180 Amsterdam and working with leading agencies such as Chiat/Day/Mojo, Hunt Lascaris TBWA, Cliff Freeman & Partners and Lowe Howard Spink.

The film begins in 2017 and covers three years and the unprecedented hurdles – not least a global pandemic – as the athletes navigate seeking asylum while competing overseas.

The final chapter of this story (for now) has had COVID-19 to compete with. With their training camp closed, the team were sent back to refugee camps and forced to put their Olympic ambitions on hold. The final arc of the film was therefore directed by Richard Bullock from afar, with the athletes self-shooting on Skype and smartphones in Israel, Germany, Kenya and Switzerland.

Self-shooting aside, throughout the film’s three-year journey Bullock ensured the athletes were empowered and in control of their narratives.

Richard Bullock, the director, says: “Refugees get a lot of people talking for them, so I made a conscious effort to allow the audience to listen to the characters directly. The refugee athletes are all incredibly wise and thoughtful. From very early on, I tried to uncover how they were able to remain so hopeful and positive when the world had given them little reason to believe it was anything but violence and horror. I learnt an incredible amount about coping with difficulties and facing uncertainty from them. I think that’s the biggest takeaway – it’s not about running at all. It’s about resilience and overcoming hardship. If you’re ever faced with a mountain to climb, the words and actions of these athletes will resonate profoundly.”

The inspiring words of one athlete, in particular, stuck with the director. Gai Nyang told him: “I dream with my eyes open. I do my dreaming during the day and I always think and say to myself, there is still a chance to make something of this life.”

On has had a partnership with the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation (TLPF) since 2017, where 31 refugee athletes receive housing and training. The majority of athletes selected by World Athletics (IAAF) to represent the Athlete Refugee Team are from the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation.

Olivier Bernhard, the co-founder of On, says: “This story embodies the very essence of transcending sport and championing the human spirit. World Refugee Day and World Refugee Week is a time when humanitarians across the globe come together to celebrate life and support the victims who have been displaced. Their race began when they were six or seven years old, with the sound of a gun, not the starter pistol,” he adds. “Isolated from their families, these athletes are not just hopefuls for the Olympics, but refugees worldwide. For the chosen few who enter the Olympic stadium under the flag of no nation, their achievement will be unmatched by any other athlete. We are pleased their story, talent and spirit is being introduced and celebrated with our longest ever feature film, ‘RUN’. We consider this our gift to the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation and Athlete Refugee Team, paying homage to this special day. The human spirit knows no limits.”

With the world facing COVID-19, despair is something that we battle with every day. In such a trying time, we need to cling to all the inspiration we can get. Thanks to Nike, we have legends from the world of sport to cheer us on. In yet another hard-hitting motivational ad titled Never Too Far Down, Nike has managed to instil viewers with hope and enthusiasm.

Featuring the comeback stories of all-time greats, this campaign is a grand affair. More precisely, it features names like LeBron James, Serena Williams, and Tiger Woods. It reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit amid a global health crisis. Moreover, the creative geniuses from Widen+Kennedy have crafted a storytelling marvel. The campaign not only exudes visual brilliance but also boasts a powerful narration. Consequently, the core message of the ad is one that’s cohesively delivered.

Never Too Far Down resonates as much with an athlete as with a layman. All in all, we feel that it is a great addition to Nike’s roster of sport-themed inspirational ads.

Nike: Play for the World | You Can’t Stop Us. Over the years,…

Nike: Play for the World | You Can’t Stop Us.

Over the years, Nike has perfected the craft of publishing inspirational content. As the brand itself says, “Nike strives to bring innovation and inspiration to every athlete in the world.” But, this statement isn’t what sets Nike apart from other brands advertising in similar domains. As exemplified in a recent campaign called ‘Play for the World’, Nike defines an athlete as anyone with a body. This simple yet inclusive definition is what draws people from all walks of life to Nike commercials.

‘Play for the World’ owes its conceptualisation to Wieden+Kennedy. It addresses how COVID-19 is affecting athletes across the globe. Humongous names like LeBron James, Sara Hughes, and Ramla Ali star in the campaign. However, it finds its gusto in the communal display of athletic feats that people are accomplishing indoors. The Black and White colour palette further connects viewers with the campaign’s emotional impact. All in all, ‘Play for the World’ celebrates the human pursuit of sports excellence. It addresses how athletes are still going hard despite staying indoors.

Consequently, we feel that ‘Play for the World’ is yet another home run for Nike. Furthermore, it is the kind of creative expression that the world needs at this moment.

“An athlete or a mother. You shouldn’t have to choose,” says Swiss triathlete…

“An athlete or a mother. You shouldn’t have to choose,” says Swiss triathlete and Olympic gold medalist Nicola Spirig in On Running latest marketing campaign.

The campaign contrasts footage of Spirig’s incredible endurance – running, cycling and swimming through the Swiss mountains – with the intimacy of caring for her three young children. The film is made by award-winning creative director and sports expert, Andy Fackrell. Fackrell has a rich legacy in the creative field, having worked with leading agencies such as Wieden + Kennedy and 180 Amsterdam on the two biggest sports brands in the world – and most recently he’s committed his time to environmental and socially conscious campaigns.

Andy Fackrell, Creative Director:
“I’ve been lucky to work with some of the biggest names for Nike and Adidas, but this was the first time working with an athlete who is also a mother of three. And one that’s been competing at this level for 20 years. The reason she’s so good is more than simply talent – being a mother has made her even more determined and focused. She may well be the greatest endurance athlete in the world. And on top of this, she’s also a lawyer. Therefore, I can safely say: superfrau, Nicola Spirig most definitely is.”

“In this day and age” says Spirig, “I believe you should be able to enjoy motherhood and enjoy continued career success, whether it’s in professional sports or any occupation. I’m proud to be part of the assembly of professional sportswomen who are speaking out for their rights as female athletes and I believe that our collective voice is finally being heard. My sponsor, On, is a real trailblazer in their support of parenting athletes and I am truly grateful that such a progressive and forward-thinking company has given me the freedom and encouragement to pursue the joint family and competitive sporting life I choose without any restrictions whatsoever.”

In the past few years, several high-profile female athletes have returned to their sport after giving birth, continuing to win big, with examples including Serena Williams, pro golfer Stacy Lewis, and runner Alysia Montano. According to ESPN’s survey of professional athletes who are also mothers, 41% percent said their income decreased when they became mothers.

On Running believes no athletes should ever have to compromise their sporting career to have a family.

About On:
On is a young Swiss sports company based in Zurich (Switzerland), Portland (Oregon, USA), Yokohama (Japan), Melbourne (Australia), São Paulo (Brazil) and Shanghai (China). It has one simple mission: make running fun. A team of sports scientists, world-class athletes and designers spearhead this mantra.

On running shoes are winning design and technology distinctions all over the world – most recently the ISPO Product of the Year and Gold Award for the Best Performance Shoes 2017/18. World Champion and elite athletes are winning podiums all over the world in On.

MuscleBlaze latest ad campaign, Naam Hai Ziddi is a dose of adrenaline rush.…

MuscleBlaze latest ad campaign, Naam Hai Ziddi is a dose of adrenaline rush. We call it that because we feel the campaign (without any filter) shows the unrelenting determination that drives athletes to do the impossible.

In this brain-dominant era, more importance is given to intellectual quest than the gruelling athletic pursuits. But athletes like Sham Singh Shera are proving to the world that how when one can beat all odds with just willpower, and it needs no intellectual matter to feed on but runs on the unwavering determination. You want it, just get it. MuscleBlaze brings to light what is that another thing that these athletes use to stay Ziddi and make it to the highest podium. It’s nutrition. An athlete’s passion requires him or her to have a lifestyle that cannot be (under any circumstance) negotiated. There’s no compromise on this road. And to have such a disciplined lifestyle, it’s particularly necessary for the athlete to have a rich source of nutrition. And that’s where MuscleBlaze comes in.

By simply using these irrevocable insights that are an inseparable aspect from the lives of some of the ziddiest athletes, MuscleBlaze celebrates the Ziddi or the stubborn side of athletes which eventually makes them get what they want regardless of where they started from. From spending demanding hours in gyms to the inexorable play arenas whether indoors or outdoors, the campaign shows some of the greatest athletes who go on unrelentingly without giving in to disempowering opinions hurled by others. Because unka #NaamHaiZiddi.

Creative advertising campaigns are those that give customers a strong reason to get…

Creative advertising campaigns are those that give customers a strong reason to get associated with your brand. And one such digital innovation is Experiential Marketing Campaigns.

Why is Experiential Marketing Campaigns the need of the hour? Is it really effective? In our opinion, experiential marketing helps a brand to get into the hearts and minds of its customers through a unique experience. An experience is remembered because it leaves you with emotion, whether it is a joyful emotion or a memorable expression. If a brand is able to stir the right positive emotions within their customers then they’re home! And the probability of customers turning into loyal consumers increases as today’s customer is looking for meaningful associations through experiences. It’s no more a mere one-time transaction for them. It’s definitely more impactful than just throwing up Facebook or Twitter ads or things like that.

Work events are really hit or miss. Let’s be honest: How many times have you found yourself anxiously fidgeting with a paper napkin in the corner of a stuffy networking happy hour?

Have you ever thought as to why events or trade shows or industry seminars don’t really make people come back? It’s not about the event. It’s about the experience people go through. An experiential marketing campaign like an entire area been designed to look and feel like a giant video game for a game promotion is much better than a normal kiosk or a verbose discourse at an event where many just yawn and forget and never come back. Then it’s no more a yet another exhausting event but an exciting experience to look forward to. That’s what experiential marketing is all about.

Bullitt announced today that director/photographer Noah Conopask has joined its filmmaking collective. A…

Bullitt announced today that director/photographer Noah Conopask has joined its filmmaking collective. A meticulous planner of stories that embody powerful moments of anticipation, kinetic energy, and emotional performance, Noah has directed projects for a variety of brands including Bose, Red Bull, and Eastbay. His Commonwealth Games film for the BBC was honoured with a gold award at the Ciclope Festival in Berlin. Photography has also been an ever-present part of Noah’s life, and his innate talent for capturing a story in a single frame is revealed in his popular Instagram channel.

“I’m delighted to welcome Noah to the Bullitt roster,” says Bullitt President/EP Luke Ricci. “What I love about his storytelling is the epic scope he brings to the films he makes while never sacrificing the nuance of character and emotion. All of us at Bullitt are excited about working with Noah and producing great content together.”

Noah first discovered the impact of capturing human struggle on film as he documented his childhood buddies skating on a neighbourhood half-pipe in Arnold, Maryland. He subsequently transferred that passion into shooting world-class athletes and celebrities across the globe. His early career melded burgeoning immersive and interactive experiences with design thinking; a natural connection point for Bullitt’s expanded reach into VR, AR and other exploratory projects in advertising and entertainment. For Noah, wanderlust includes both global travel and alternate, crafted realities.

“Bullitt understands how the lane is broadening and have embraced different formats and perspectives from the start – all with a cinematic level of production,” comments Noah Conopask. “With these factors and the collective body of work produced to date; I’m in exceptional company and excited to see what we can make together.”

In his branded work, energetic mediations on the human condition are relayed in sublime moments of both fragility and strength. He transforms expectations and elevates advertising into visionary films. Inherent to that process is “a burning desire to inspire everyone involved dig deep within and give the film everything he or she has. Blood, sweat, tears, laughs. A constructive trust, whether an actor, blue chip athlete, scientist, or an aviator, is essential. When everyone is a shareholder in the experience, beautiful results occur.”

About Bullitt
A filmmakers collective and creative studio situated at the nexus of entertainment and advertising. Founded by creators for creators, Bullitt has curated a roster of exceptional creative talent expert in the creation of brand-integrated entertainment and advertising content.

Under Armour is a clothing and footwear brand that primarily manufactures performance apparels…

Under Armour is a clothing and footwear brand that primarily manufactures performance apparels for athletes. Training is a process that feels different to everyone but has a singular goal associated with it; personal development. Under Armour – Will Makes Us Family depicts how people engaged in vastly different training styles are conjoined by their will.

Droga5’s creative vision acts as the backbone of the campaign. The digital short portrays people from different walks of life working hard to overcome the obstacles in their way. Will Make us a Family features montage of different individuals engaging in different physical activities. From a track runner to a ballet dancer, the short film portrays the strenuous efforts of different performers.

We feel that the core message of the campaign #WillMakesUsFamily resonates with the brand identity of Under Armour. If the end goal of the campaign was to inculcate a sense of togetherness in its athletic base, it had been neatly accomplished!

Serena Williams is a sports icon familiar to almost every household across the…

Serena Williams is a sports icon familiar to almost every household across the globe. She’s not just a brilliant athlete, but also someone with a melodious voice. In a bid to kick off the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a bare-chested Serena released her rendition of Divinyls’ famous song – I Touch Myself for Berlei.

Serena’s breathtaking performance not only presents a meaningful message but also acts as a tribute to Chrissy Amphlett. I Touch Myself is a powerful example of heartfelt activism that hits home.

The digitalized version of Serena’s performance was curated by JWT-Sydney and broadcasted under Berlei’s breast cancer awareness campaign. By stepping out of her comfort-zone, Serena urges other women to self-check for lumps in their breasts from time-to-time. In a report by WHO, it is stated that almost 15% of cancer-related deaths in women have been attributed to breast cancer; Therefore, it isn’t an issue to be taken lightly. As said by Serena herself, early detection can significantly reduce the risk of mortality associated with this disease.

Judging by Serena’s responsible demeanor towards the cause and the associated response by the public, it can be fairly stated that Chrissy Amphlett’s legacy, Project I Touch Myself, is receiving the treatment it deserves!

Gillette, an official partner of the NFL, has launched a new television commercial Nothing Comes Easy, celebrating the journey to greatness of Shaquem Griffin and all those who have overcome adversities to make their dreams come true.

Shaquem Griffin was born with amniotic band syndrome affecting his left hand, which resulted in it being amputated as a child. Through hard work and dedication, with the love and guidance of his father, he went on to become a college football star and rise to the NFL, along with his twin brother and teammate, both Seattle Seahawks.

The commercial entitled “Your Best Never Comes Easy” traces Shaquem’s life from childhood, how he surmounted all the challenges life brought him, to the NFL. It chronicles the role of his father in his success from backyard football drills to his first shave to the NFL draft. It continues Gillette’s celebration of the bond between all fathers and sons.

The commercial, created by Grey New York, ends with the themelines: Your Best Never Comes Easy. The Best a Man Can Get… Gillette” with Shaquem in his Seahawks uniform ready for the game.
