Dove is leading a powerful movement aimed at combating digital distortion with its…

Dove is leading a powerful movement aimed at combating digital distortion with its new #NoDigitalDistortion initiative. The global brand is encouraging social media users to ‘Turn Your Back’ on the controversial Bold Glamour filter. Developed by Ogilvy and DAVID, this influencer-led campaign aims to address the damaging effects of digital beauty standards that social media platforms often promote.

The Bold Glamour Filter: A Distorted Ideal of Beauty

The Bold Glamour filter, which became a viral sensation shortly after its launch, presents an unnervingly perfect portrayal of beauty that feels too real to be genuine. In just a week, the hashtag associated with the filter has amassed over 365 million views, raising awareness about the negative influence this digital manipulation can have on individuals, especially young girls. Dove’s #NoDigitalDistortion campaign highlights the need to reject such filters and promote authenticity in digital representation.

The Impact of Digital Distortion on Self-Esteem

The #NoDigitalDistortion campaign is not just about turning away from harmful filters; it’s about sparking a global conversation around beauty standards on social media. According to research conducted by the Dove Self-Esteem Project, 38% of girls in the U.S. report feeling unable to meet the unrealistic beauty ideals set by influencers online. Shockingly, by the age of 13, 80% of young girls have already used filters or photo-retouching apps to alter their appearance.

This digital distortion contributes to a worrying trend: girls who frequently alter their photos are twice as likely to experience lower body esteem compared to their peers who embrace their natural appearance. Dove’s #NoDigitalDistortion movement strives to counteract this cycle and empower individuals, especially young girls, to embrace their true selves without the need for digital alterations.

A Global Creative Effort

The campaign’s launch coincided with a global creative meeting hosted by Ogilvy, bringing together creative minds from around the world. The campaign, which was released as a Borderless Brief, quickly gathered over 250 ideas from Ogilvy’s international network. The final result, the #TurnYourBack campaign, was developed by DAVID Madrid and Ogilvy UK, with production assistance from DAVID São Paulo.

The #TurnYourBack concept is a simple yet powerful visual representation of rejecting digital distortions. It encourages people to physically turn away from harmful beauty standards, whether online or offline, and take a stand for self-acceptance. By joining this movement, individuals show their commitment to authenticity and reject the unrealistic beauty ideals that can harm mental and emotional well-being.

Conclusion: Taking a Stand for Real Beauty
Dove’s #NoDigitalDistortion campaign is more than just a call to reject filters—it is a call to reclaim digital spaces and celebrate real beauty. As more and more influencers and content creators join the movement, the campaign continues to gain momentum, with the hope of shifting societal perceptions of beauty towards something more inclusive and authentic. By supporting this movement, Dove is fostering a future where beauty is celebrated in all its natural forms, and where the digital world reflects true human diversity rather than distorted ideals.

The Dove Code – Discover Dove’s stance on AI, authenticity, and empowering women.…

The Dove Code – Discover Dove’s stance on AI, authenticity, and empowering women. Dive into the real beauty movement!

In a world where beauty standards constantly evolve and technology reshapes our perceptions, Dove stands as a beacon of authenticity and inclusivity. For two decades, Dove has been at the forefront of a transformative campaign, challenging societal norms, media portrayals, and industry standards to redefine what it means to be beautiful. However, as the brand commemorates its 20th anniversary of championing real beauty, it finds itself confronted with new challenges in the digital age.

Back in 2004, Dove’s groundbreaking campaign began with a stark revelation: only 2% of women globally considered themselves beautiful. Since then, Dove has tirelessly worked to make positive beauty experiences accessible to all. From urging the beauty industry to widen its representation to advocating for transparency in digital manipulation, Dove has been a catalyst for change.

To mark this milestone, Dove conducted a comprehensive study to assess the current state of beauty worldwide. The findings paint a sobering picture. Despite some progress, the pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty ideals remains pervasive. In the United States alone, over one-third of women would sacrifice a year of their lives to achieve an ideal appearance. The standards have evolved, but the expectations have become increasingly unattainable, encompassing contradictory attributes like being both slim and curvy.

Moreover, the rise of artificial intelligence presents a new frontier in the battle for real beauty. With the exponential growth of AI-generated content, women are bombarded with digitally altered images that blur the line between reality and fantasy. Nearly nine out of ten women and girls report exposure to harmful beauty content online, with AI exacerbating the issue. Despite the potential for empowerment, many feel pressured to alter their appearance based on AI-generated imagery.

Dr. Phillippa Diedrichs, a Research Psychologist specializing in body image, emphasizes the importance of representation in combating these challenges. As AI technology advances, distinguishing between genuine beauty and manufactured perfection becomes increasingly difficult. Dove’s commitment to authenticity is underscored by its decision to never use AI in place of real people in its advertising.

In response to the growing influence of AI, Dove has introduced the Real Beauty Prompt Guidelines, offering practical guidance for creating more representative images in AI-generated content. The brand’s latest campaign, “The Dove Code,” reflects on the impact of AI on beauty perceptions, advocating for women to reclaim the power to define beauty on their own terms.

Alessandro Manfredi, Dove’s Chief Marketing Officer, reaffirms the brand’s dedication to championing real beauty. By rejecting AI in its communications and empowering women to embrace their authenticity, Dove continues to lead the charge towards a future where beauty is a source of happiness, not anxiety, for every woman and girl. As the campaign slogan declares, Dove seeks to uphold “The Dove Code” of real beauty in an increasingly digital world.

In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our…

In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of our lives, offering us the ability to connect, share, and communicate with people worldwide. However, the online world isn’t always a safe haven, especially for young women. It exposes them to thousands of toxic influences that can significantly impact their self-esteem. Often, people fail to realize the profound damage that words can generate. In this article, we will delve into the importance of being responsible on social media and discuss a fascinating experiment ‘Watergraphy’ based on the pseudoscience known as “The Memory of Water,” which sheds light on the power of words in shaping our perceptions done by Dove

The Impact of Toxic Influences on Self-Esteem
Young women, particularly those in their formative years, are particularly vulnerable to the influences they encounter on social media. The constant barrage of images, comments, and comparisons can take a toll on their self-esteem. The pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards and the fear of judgment can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth.

The Responsibility of Social Media Users
Recognizing the impact of our words and actions on social media is crucial. While it’s easy to forget that there are real people behind the screens, our interactions have a significant impact on their self-esteem and overall well-being. The campaign discussed in this article seeks to remind us of our collective responsibility to promote a positive and nurturing online environment.

The Experiment: “The Memory of Water”
“The Memory of Water” is a concept often labeled as pseudoscience. It posits that water has the ability to “remember” the energy or information it has been exposed to. In a thought-provoking experiment conducted with the assistance of an expert, both negative and positive comments were exposed to water to observe how it would react.

The Remarkable Results
The outcome of the experiment was nothing short of astonishing. When negative comments were introduced to the water, the results were irregular and chaotic. The water displayed an uneven and disrupted crystalline structure, reflecting the disharmony that negative energy can bring.

Conversely, when the water was exposed to positive comments, the transformation was striking. The water crystallized in a harmonious and beautiful way, mirroring the positive and nurturing nature of the words it had encountered.

Connecting the Dots
What can we learn from this peculiar experiment? The answer lies in the undeniable fact that we are, in essence, mostly water. If the energy of words can have such a profound effect on something as basic as water, it makes us question how these same words affect young women, who are at an age where their self-esteem is in the process of being built.

It is critical to recognize that the words we choose to share on social media platforms have the power to either uplift or tear down. As responsible individuals, we all play a role in shaping the self-esteem and self-image of the young women who navigate the digital world. Understanding the impact of our words and actions is the first step towards creating a more positive and nurturing online environment.

Conclusion
Social media is a double-edged sword, offering both incredible opportunities for connection and self-expression, as well as the potential for harm to self-esteem and well-being, especially in young women. The experiment inspired by “The Memory of Water” serves as a stark reminder of the power that words hold, even in the digital realm.

As responsible individuals, we must strive to be mindful of the impact our words can have on others, particularly young women who are in the critical stage of building their self-esteem. By fostering a culture of positivity and support on social media, we can help young women navigate the digital world with confidence and resilience, ultimately contributing to their emotional well-being and self-esteem. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of the next generation.

Toxic Influence uncover the alarming truth: Two in three girls spend more time on social media than with friends. Dive into the impact of toxic beauty trends and a revolutionary deepfake campaign by Dove to protect our daughters.

In today’s digital age, social media has become an integral part of young people’s lives, especially teenage girls. Unfortunately, it has also given rise to harmful beauty trends, hacks, and products that are increasingly linked to depression and teen suicide. Shockingly, two out of three girls spend more time on social media than they do with their friends. This article sheds light on a groundbreaking campaign by Dove’s Self-Esteem Project, which aims to address the issue of toxic beauty advice and empower parents to protect their daughters online.

The Prevalence of Harmful Beauty Trends on Social Media
Social media platforms have become a breeding ground for influencers promoting beauty trends that can be detrimental to young girls’ self-esteem and mental health. The pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards often leads to a negative impact on their self-image and overall well-being.

The Disparity in Content Exposure on Social Media Platforms
One alarming aspect of the issue is the disparity in content exposure on social media platforms between parents and their daughters. Algorithms tailor content to individual users, showing them personalized feeds based on their previous interactions. As a result, parents may not be aware of the toxic advice their daughters are exposed to online.

The Innovative Solution: Using Deepfake Technology
To tackle this problem, Dove’s Self-Esteem Project collaborated with Ogilvy and adopted a creative and impactful approach. They utilized deepfake technology to put the words of toxic influencers directly into the mouths of the one person teenage girls trust the most: their mothers. This campaign aimed to create awareness among parents about the harmful content their daughters might encounter daily.

The Implementation and Impact of the Campaign
The agency meticulously tracked 50 toxic trends in real-time across various social media platforms. Based on the most popular phrases of hundreds of toxic influencers, they developed fake transcripts. These transcripts were then “spoken” by deepfake versions of the girls’ mothers, bringing the issue to light in an eye-opening and shareable film.

The campaign’s global rollout across 18 markets was met with resounding success. It garnered an astounding 115.5 million organic views and an impressive 3.1 billion impressions. The impactful campaign ignited millions of conversations between parents and their daughters, fostering awareness and promoting healthier online habits.

Conclusion
The prevalence of harmful beauty trends on social media is a pressing issue that affects young girls worldwide. Dove’s Self-Esteem Project, in collaboration with Ogilvy, has taken a revolutionary step to address this problem head-on. By using deepfake technology to raise awareness among parents, the campaign has successfully sparked conversations about the importance of protecting our daughters from toxic online influences.

As responsible individuals, parents, and digital citizens, we must collectively work towards creating a safer and more positive online environment for young minds. Let us continue to support initiatives like Dove’s Self-Esteem Project, which not only highlights the problem but also encourages dialogue and empowers parents to play a proactive role in safeguarding their daughters’ mental well-being. Together, we can foster a healthier and happier digital world for the next generation.

Real Soaps campaign by Dove stood out for its creative strategy of representing real beauty and women

80% of women are unhappy with what they see in the mirror and try to hide parts of their skin such as freckles, wrinkles and stretch marks. At Dove, they made a tribute to the skin through the iconic soap bar that we always see as smooth and perfect, this time revealing those factory details such as cracks and slits that, just like the marks on the skin, make part of real beauty. #RealSoaps

The CROWN Act campaign helped Dove and the CROWN Coalition end race-based hair…

The CROWN Act campaign helped Dove and the CROWN Coalition end race-based hair discrimination nationwide.

Over the past few years, there have been numerous reports of hair discrimination in the workplace and in schools, including children being sent home because of their hair or job offers rescinded when people have not been willing to change their hair.

This is why Dove co-founded the CROWN Coalition in 2019 to advocate for the CROWN Act- legislation that eliminates race-based hair discrimination in the workplace and schools based on hair texture and protective styles such as braids, locs, twists, and bantu knots. The CROWN Act (and bills inspired by The CROWN Act) has been signed in 13 states and 28 municipalities as of June 2021.

The CROWN Coalition (Dove, National Urban League, Color Of Change, and Western Center on Law & Poverty) believes natural hairstyles should be celebrated, not discouraged. For this reason, they are committed to Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural hair.

Meet the Women Behind this
They are on a mission to #PasstheCROWN to end hair discrimination in the workplace and schools.

In 2019 Dove partnered with Getty Images, Girlgaze, women & non-binary individuals everywhere to create Project #ShowUs, a collection of 10,000+ images that offer a more inclusive vision of beauty for all media & advertisers to use. Now, Dove has taken further action in South Africa and is making history with It’s on Us.

70% of women do not feel represented in media and advertising, and every day, women’s lives are affected by these limitations, exclusions, and stereotypes.

To challenge this issue, Dove has infiltrated international casting calls with real beauty models and a message to encourage inclusion in their latest campaign; It’s on Us. Dove pledges that if a brand chooses one of their models, they will pay to cover the appearance fee’s cost.

#ItsOnUs furthers Dove’s commitment to drive change and empower women by striving for an inclusive representation of beauty.

Let’s #StopTheBeautyTest
3 out of 4 Indian women are rejected for their looks during the arranged marriage process. This is a telling matrimonial statistic. Its time society takes notice of how ugly the quest for beauty really is. Dove believes if we look beyond tall, slim, and skin color, we will discover a whole new world of beauty. To those who put women through this beauty test, Dove asks how much beauty is enough. Dove urges you to look for the beauty, not the flaws!

Project #ShowUs by Dove redefining how women are represented and setting a new…

Project #ShowUs by Dove redefining how women are represented and setting a new standard for the authentic and diverse representation of women across the world.

Dove is partnering with women & non-binary individuals everywhere to create Project #ShowUs, a collection of 10,000+ images that offer a more inclusive vision of beauty for all media & advertisers to use.

In partnership with the largest international stock photo distributor, Getty Images, and Girlgaze – a collective of female-identifying and non-binary photographers – Dove is building the world’s largest stock photo library of its kind. The move builds on its commitment to share a more inclusive vision of beauty.

A year in the making, the collection – currently 5,000 images strong and continually growing – is created exclusively by women, female-identifying and non-binary individuals and is available now for the media and advertising industries to view, license and use.

“What’s so important about this particular campaign is that we’ve been able to highlight and photograph women and girls all over the world who don’t generally get seen,” says Amanda de Cadenet, founder and CEO, Girlgaze.

“As image professionals, we have the responsibility to reflect society authentically and to help trigger social change,” adds Dr Rebecca Swift, Director of Creative Insights at Getty Images.

70% of women taking part in a recent global Dove study told us they still don’t feel represented in the images they see every day. Images in ads and the media still impose unrealistic standards and limiting stereotypes which present a narrow view of who women are, what they should look like and what they can achieve. It affects their lives, health, relationships and the opportunities they are given. We wanted to drive deep systemic change.

What makes Project #ShowUs unique?

For the first time on Getty Images, every one of the 179 people photographed for the collection has personally defined their search descriptions and tags for their pictures. This allows them to express their beauty in their way, on their terms, ensuring they feel realistically represented. This project is 100% powered by women, depicted as they are in real life, with absolutely no digital distortion.

Be part of the change. Visit www.gettyimages.com/ShowUs to look through the library and encourage any agencies you work with to use imagery from the collection.

This campaign is about:
Project #ShowUs, Getty Images, Girlgaze, advertising, social change, stereotype, Digital Campaign, Stock Images, Photoshoot, Photograph, Cannes Lions 2019

The tragic demise of George Floyd has changed America in various ways. It…

The tragic demise of George Floyd has changed America in various ways. It has amplified the uproar against systemic racism in the USA and has turned Black Lives Matter campaign into a global movement. Well, that’s not all! Global brands have also joined the fight for a fairer world. A recent digital ad by Dove is proof of that. Titled America the Beautiful, the campaign features highlights from various anti-racism protests.

Furthermore, Ogilvy Canada’s touch is easily visible in the campaign’s top-notch editing. The soundtrack also reaffirms the same. But, the most powerful aspect of the campaign lies outside its artistic merit. Instead, it manifests in Dove’s commitment (worth $5 million) to real change.

All in all, we admire Dove’s sincere attempt to combat systemic racism. Also, we’d love to see more brands do the same!

Somewhere along the way, it has become the norm to judge women based on their appearance and use their beauty against them. With the #MyBeautyMySay campaign we feature stories of amazing women who stood up for their own beauty.

Heather’s story

Taking up boxing as a hobby, Heather was always told she was “too pretty to fight”. She’s now fighting professionally and is raising the profile of female boxers.

Jessica’s story
