On 7 October, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 69th birthday and the 15th anniversary…

On 7 October, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 69th birthday and the 15th anniversary of the murder of the well-known Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is marking this sad occasion by releasing a thousand black balloons to remind President Putin about the climate of impunity in his country.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and BETC ask the international community to wish Putin an #UnhappyBirthdayMrPutin.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) launch a great operation in the press and social media. RSF will be launching an action in front of Russian embassies in Paris, London, Berlin and front of Novaïa Gazeta in Moscow to release 1000 black balloons #UnhappyBirthdayMrPutin.

“In our country, journalists can protect themselves in only one way, by showing that if you kill one journalist, another will always come and in the end you cannot kill all of them,” Milashina says in “They keep journalism alive in Russia,” a new book published by Les Petits Matins that was edited by Johann Bihr and has a postscript by Jeanne Cavelier, the head of RSF’s Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk.

Russia is ranked 150th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2021 World Press Freedom Index. Vladimir Putin has a prominent place in the gallery of “press freedom predators” that RSF published in July.

UNESCO: #QuestionsThatMatter | World Press Freedom Day “The sovereignty of the people and…

UNESCO: #QuestionsThatMatter | World Press Freedom Day

“The sovereignty of the people and the freedom of the press are two entirely correlative things,” Alexis de Tocqueville. Some crises can act as revelators. What was striking during the Covid-19 crisis was this deep dependence on public goods such as water, transit, health infrastructure, and equipment… Goods are so common that we forget how vital they are. Information is one of those fundamental assets. The role of journalists in a society is to inform, investigate and denounce. More than just a right, press freedom is the sine qua non-condition for any democracy.

If people do not know what is happening in their society, if their leaders if economic, moral, or religious powers act under the veil of secrecy, no one can act. Through 5 symptomatic questions of today’s world and by confronting readers directly with the effects of censorship, UNESCO asks us about the individual and collective consequences of a lack of press freedom. Without this possibility to ask questions: those that annoy, those that disturb, we are all deprived of information, and by the same action.

To silence a journalist is to silence all of us.

The Uncensored Playlist Online press censorship is on the rise globally. Meaning that…

The Uncensored Playlist

Online press censorship is on the rise globally.

Meaning that in a large number of countries, people are unable to access many independent blogs and news sites, denying them their right to free information.

On the 12th of March: World Day Against Cyber Censorship, Reporters Without Borders Germany created a digital loophole to evade censorship.

Introducing: The Uncensored Playlist. While press freedom is not available in the worlds most oppressed societies – global music streaming sites are.

Five acclaimed independent journalists from five countries suffering from strict government censorship teamed up with Musical Director Lucas Mayer to turn 10 articles that had previously been censored into 10 uncensored pop songs. These songs were then uploaded onto freely available music streaming sites. Allowing these stories to be slipped back into the countries where they had once been forbidden.

For the very first time, reporters have become music artists to bring the truth to those that had once been denied it.

Join the fight! Get to know the brave journalists, the stories behind the songs, and share The Uncensored Playlist using our hashtag #truthfindsaway. Together we’ll show oppressive governments all over the world that they can’t silence freedom of information. No freedom without media freedom.

When a journalist searches for truth, death often finds them instead. In 12…

When a journalist searches for truth, death often finds them instead. In 12 years, over 1000 journalists have been killed. In war zones. But also at home. On the corner of the street. On the corner of your street. They were killed in cold blood. Deliberately. With impunity. To silence topics some people wanted to keep hidden. UNESCO #KeepTruthAlive

2 November is the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. 9 out of 10 cases are unresolved. 93% of killed journalists were local journalists. It is up to all of us, citizens, to help protect journalists, so that they may continue to inform us.

A series of 12 portraits of local journalists that have been killed were also developed and shared on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, to illustrate how the threats, intimidations and the fear of being attacked are often an everyday reality for some journalists. To that end, UNESCO and DDB Paris developed a Google Maps, keeptruthalive.co (link is external), which features the names, dates and locations of the 1348 journalist killings that have been condemned by UNESCO since 1993. Internet users are thus able to access information on each journalist, and to share the map on social media to call for justice and demand an end to impunity for the violence perpetuated against media workers.

#StillSpeakingUp campaign gave voice to 4 journalists murdered in Mexico.

– Miroslava Breach, Javier Valdez, Moises Sanchez y Jose Armando Rodriguez “El Choco” regained their voices to demand justice.
– The families of the killed journalists approved and collaborated with this initiative.
– On April 29th, the Twitter accounts for these murdered journalists were reactivated. From there it was narrated what stories they were covering and their possible causes of death.

Mexico is one of the deadliest countries for journalists. Between 2007 and 2019, 106 murders of journalists have been recorded in which the motive for the crime has been their work.

#SeguimosHablando (StillSpeakingUp) is an initiative that is the culmination of two years working with the families of four killed journalists: Miroslava Breach, Javier Valdez, Moisés Sánchez y José Armando Rodríguez “El Choco”. It is also an effort to construct a narrative to give them voice, so these injustices are not forgotten.

#SeguimosHablando was first launched on Twitter, on April 29th, in the same week when the World Press Freedom Day was commemorated (May 3rd). In Mexico this day has different meaning due to the somber situation caused by the violence in which journalists are living every day, which prevents them from even be able to report it.
The organization Propuesta Civica, dedicated to offering legal defense to journalists at risk, launched the initiative #SeguimosHablando as part of their fight to help human rights to be enforced.

Sara Mendiola, General Director of Propuesta Cívica, said: “It is vital to make visible the situation that Mexico is facing in issues like free speech: the number of attacks, intimidation and murders of journalists in the country is alarming. To this day, the State has been overwhelmed, the federal government does not have a strategy in their agenda that guarantees that this situation will change. Making this situation visible in the local sphere and then giving it an international scope can show the impact (this is having) and makes possible to convert it in a symbolic weapon that pressures the Mexican government.”

Diego Wallach, Publicis Mexico’s Chief Creative Officer, the creative agency responsible for the idea, indicated that “the situation for journalists in the country is unbearable and it’s not only about the murders. When we were working with the families of Javier, Miroslava, Moises y “El Choco” we realized that this violence has left a mark in more than a hundred families.”

“We began to study the work, language and other aspects in the life of these four journalists, trying to give them a voice that portrayed the way each one talked. This campaign demands justice for all the members of the press that have been murdered and is trying to make visible this tragedy, all as the first step to boost concrete actions to end with this problem.”

In the next hours after being set in motion, the campaign #SeguimosHablando became Trending topic in Social Media in Mexico, thanks largely to the great reaction that journalists, activists, celebrities, media, non-government organizations and people in general had.

Rapidly, newspapers and broadcast media echoed the campaign, which had mentions in radio, TV and international media.

The creative concept behind #SeguimosHablando started in Publicis Mexico and was implemented by The Power of One, the solution hub created by Publicis Groupe. Ana Ramos, Marketing and Communications Director in Publicis Media, coordinated with the media and ran the campaign. Rodrigo Rodríguez, Content Director in Publicis Media, oversaw the content execution.
