Nip in the Bud – A young woman is horrified when she goes for a job interview something that her mother experienced years back.
Marking 3 years of #MeToo – a movement that empowered and encouraged many women across the globe to speak up.

Speaking on the film, Titus Upputuru, Creative Head, Taproot dentsu, Gurgaon said, “It wasn’t an easy subject. One had to keep in mind the sensitivities involved. What happens between a man and a woman within the confines of a professional environment is between them. There are no witnesses. There are no cameras. Nip in the bud is a tribute to every single woman who had the courage to speak about what happened in a moment where there was no one to corroborate the story. Unfortunately, many women took years to report and this allowed the men concerned to continue with the predatory behaviour. Hope this digital film inspires women across the world to nip it in the bud.” For the record, Titus is the writer and director of this intriguing film.

Creative agency TBWA\Dublin launches a compelling new campaign for the Department of Justice…

Creative agency TBWA\Dublin launches a compelling new campaign for the Department of Justice and Equality. The campaign film aims to address the lack of awareness of sexual harassment and violence in everyday life – issues that have been ignored or excused for far too long in Ireland.

‘Does Ireland Have a Problem’, is directed by Brendan Canty and produced by Antidote films. It features a voiceover by poet Stephen James Smith, which addresses the audience directly by asking, ‘Is this a problem?’, as five scenes of sexual harassment play out – from groping, physical harassment, domestic violence, to a potential sexual assault. The relatability of these scenes was paramount to demonstrate how sexual harassment and violence easily coalesce in Ireland.

‘No Excuses’ national awareness campaign on sexual harassment and sexual violence.

Des Creedon, Creative Director at TBWA\Dublin explains: “For us, the process of creating a campaign always begins with a simple insight. What rang truest for us was the idea that in Ireland, whenever we observe or encounter sexual violence and sexual harassment, we’re inclined to absent ourselves of any responsibility – or worse still, excuse behaviour that’s totally inexcusable.”

“For the purposes of raising awareness, fuelling a wider conversation and inciting change, we liked the idea of a campaign that evolved or unfolded the issue for our audiences. With this in mind, the creative team of Niall McDonnell and Cian Tormey designed a campaign that first raised awareness of the issue but then reflected Ireland’s attitude towards sexual violence and harassment by reflecting the excuses we make for such behaviour.”

Head of Account Management, Paula Kelly explains: “We used the first version of the ad as a catalyst to get the people of Ireland to question themselves and their own behaviours. And this it certainly did. But once the problem was identified we knew we need to do more to try and create meaningful change.”

Join The Dots Campaign against Child Sexual Abuse is conceptualized and executed by ‘The Alter Project’, WATConsult’s latest vertical, dedicated to public service campaigns.

• Government data shows that every 15 minutes, a child is sexually abused in India. The menace of child sexual abuse calls for urgent attention
• Most perpetrators of this crime are not dangerous strangers, but the people who have the confidence and trust of the child and his/her family. Both boys and girls who are sexually abused often spend a lifetime in silence because of shame, stigma and the fear of speaking up against it

ActionAid India, an agency working with vulnerable communities since 1972 to further social and ecological justice, in partnership with WATConsult, a digital agency in the Dentsu Aegis Network’s bouquet, has launched #JoinTheDots, a campaign to highlight child sexual abuse. The campaign aims to prevent the incidence of abuse as well as encourages adults to address such violence with a call to action to See, Listen and Act.

The campaign video launched digitally, opens with a mother’s narrative showcasing a strong bond with her son, threaded together by their intimate and candid moments. It further highlights subtle signs of behaviour change in the child that parents unintentionally tend to ignore, considering it normal.

The film points out that the behavioural signs of a sexually abused child can be very similar to the signs caused due to other conditions or stress, physical or mental. It emphasizes that these signs are all present around us and adults just need to spot them and address them in time. Parents and guardians have to encourage a culture of regular communication with their child and be vigilant to acknowledge hints. This would help prevent or tackle any incidences of abuse, with the child’s best interests in mind.

To make the same simpler, the campaign video leads to a ‘Conversation Starter Tool’ on the website: www.jointhedotsnow.com. The tool enables an interestingly active conversation between a responsible adult and the child in her/his care. Through this, the child can speak about the different worlds she/he inhabits, every day, and what she/he experiences and feels in these worlds.

The conversation would also help the adult to invite the child into their world so that children can also learn about the emotions and feelings that adults might have. Through these conversations the adult will be in a better place to understand the emotions of the child, helping the adult to always act in the best interests of the child.

Elaborating on the campaign, Sandeep Chachra, Executive Director, ActionAid India said, “ActionAid India remains committed to working for the protection of children, especially girls, from discriminatory practices of sex-selective abortions, trafficking, and sexual assault. Over the years we have worked with allied organizations, the administration and policymakers to bring change on the ground for the protection, nutrition, and education of children. Children’s vulnerability will remain till children in all contexts are recognized as equal citizens. In the family, this calls for children being listened to and their interests being considered as equal, if not of paramount interest. Through the “Join the Dots” campaign, we want to help adults see, listen and act in the best interests of children.”

Working with a number of State Governments, ActionAid has been able to make a positive impact on ensuring good quality public education accessible to all children, the laws prohibiting child marriage are strengthened in multiple states and also the laws against child labour are stringent.

Boomlet Media, a Content Marketing agency, also came on board as supporting partners for this campaign.
With this campaign, WATConsult announces the launch of ‘The Alter Project’, a dedicated vertical for public service campaigns fronted by brands and institutions. The Alter Project, through its campaigns, will leverage the power of digital to champion causes, challenge archaic norms, drive civil action and inspire change.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajiv Dingra, Founder & CEO, WATConsult said, “Social good has always been at the core of our growth philosophy with our teams fearlessly picking up issues that needed a voice to transform the social order in the country. The last year at WATConsult, we saw bold campaigns that dealt with subjects such as girl child education, rights of transgender people, youth suicides, child trafficking, organ donation and such others mobilizing stakeholders through unique ways. It’s time for brands to step forward and champion mass movements for the public good. Just like its logo, The Alter Project, through its collaborations with brands and its campaigns, will lead to a new wave of dignity, equality, and inclusion. We invite brands to associate with The Alter Project by WATConsult and write the new narrative together.”

2018 was the year when WATConsult announced itself on the global stage becoming the only Indian digital agency to bag a shortlist at the Cannes Lions. The announcement of ‘The Alter Project’ comes as part of the agency’s 12th-anniversary celebrations themed 12 Notches Higher. 12 years of WATConsult’s remarkable growth story have also been displayed on their newly renewed website.

#MeToo Movement displays the magnitude of sexual harassment issues in India. Tanushree Dutta,…

#MeToo Movement displays the magnitude of sexual harassment issues in India.

Tanushree Dutta, who in a recent interview, allegedly said that actor Nana Patekar behaved badly with her on the set while doing a song of a film sparked conversations around the well-known #MeToo movement in India. This movement gained a huge momentum on social media after the actor Alyssa Milano took to the social media in 2017 as one of Harvey Weinstein’s most vocal criticizers with the following tweet, “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem.”

The various sexual assault and harassment allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein’s along with the hashtag #MeToo became a rallying cry for women to raise their voice on social media who suffered sexual misconduct at some point in their lives. However, not many may know this but it was Tarana Burke, an African-American civil rights activist who founded the Me Too movement 10 years ago. She has been using the #MeToo slogan for more than 10 years and doing the necessary work, too.

And today, after Tanushree Dutta’s scathing polemic against the actor’s alleged misbehaviour, several women are again taking to the social media to reveal the dirty doings by men of high status in the foyers of advertising. The list contains high-profile names from the advertising industry. Their doings are now no more curtained-off but brought to the fore as allegations and testimonies continue to spread like wildfire on social media.
May men who have been called out on social media for shameless acts of sexual indecorum are on the verge of getting ousted from agencies. Also, many of them have stepped down from their coveted seats or designations after the #MeToo movement has publicized their sexually transgressive behaviour. For instance, 4 of the well-known men in the advertising fraternity have stepped down after many women told them off on social media for sexual misconduct while riding the sweeping #MeToo movement. Dentsu Aegis’s Bodhisatwa Dasgupta, Kartik Iyer and Praveen Das were some of the big names to have relinquished their positions as creative barons from Happy Creative Services (owned by Dentsu). Further reports also confirmed a fourth big name that made it to the sexual harassment list, Dinesh Swamy of iProspect India, who also had to call it quits.

Dasgupta, the senior creative director at Happy Creative Services was well-known around his bro-code industry circle as a good creative mind. Now, he is allegedly reported to have been a crude sexual predator by at least four women. Similarly, there are allegations against the agency’s Chief Executive Officer, Kartik Iyer and Managing Director, Praveen Das.

Several Twitter users have tweeted about the various horrors of sexual impropriety that they have had experienced at the hands of some coveted names in the industry, and are leaving no stone unturned to call out their names on social media and also launch a tirade against agencies that have still not taken any action against the reported offenders. We have listed some of them below. (Twitter handles and tweets)

Last but not the least; we would like to conclude this article with the official press releases from some of the big advertising agencies.

Happy Mcgarrybowen

“Dentsu Aegis Network has always believed in providing a safe environment at our workplaces which is free from any kind of harassments. We have an internal committee constituted as per the rules prescribed under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 to look into any complaints in this regard. Certain incidents have just come to our notice involving senior members of Happy that allegedly took place few years ago, when Happy was not a part of DAN (Dentsu Aegis Network).

“An inquiry into these alleged incidents has already been initiated. Dentsu Aegis Network does not and will not accept anything but professional behaviour at our workplaces. We have a zero tolerance policy towards any kind of harassment at our workplaces and we are committed to speedy redressal of any complaints raised in this context after following due process, as advised by the internal committee.”

iProspect India

“With more than 50 percent of our staff being female employees including the agency CEO, iProspect has always believed in providing a safe working environment for all. We have an internal committee adhering to Vishakha Guidelines. It is unfortunate that one of our recently recruited employees has been named in the #MeToo movement for an incident which is alleged to have happened a few years ago during his tenure with his previous employer. We have a zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment at workplace and we will immediately be conducting an inquiry regarding this.”

Dentsu Webchutney

“Omkar Sane worked with us at Dentsu Webchutney between 2014-2015. During his time here, we received official complaints about his behaviour from two employees. Post the investigation which started the next day, he was let go from his position and the office immediately. And the company hasn’t worked with him in any capacity since then.”

DDB Mudra Group

“On Sunday, an accusation of behaviors and actions that violate our code of conduct was levied against an individual at our agency, anonymously via a public post on a social media site. The accusation stands in stark contrast to our values and standards at 22feet Tribal Worldwide and at the DDB Mudra Group more broadly, where it is our primary responsibility and commitment to provide our associates with a safe, fair and dignified workplace. Within hours of being notified yesterday, we initiated the process of verifying the allegations and getting them investigated.”

Publicis Communications

We have taken note of the incidences reported in the tweets. We are deeply concerned by the seriousness of these allegations and are investigating them on priority. We will ascertain facts of the matter and see that the outcome is fair and just, and appropriate actions are taken as per the Company’s policy. We re-iterate that Publicis India has a zero-tolerance policy towards any type of workplace misconduct or abuse of power or harassment.

Creativeland Asia

“We have seen some of the rumors spread by certain individuals in anonymity linking the agency with events. CLA has a great gender diverse working culture, we are one of the most secure and coveted creative agencies to work for. CLA has a robust system completely independent of the management to redress, assist and support, complainants having the employees interest at its heart.”

Medulla Communications

“On Friday, one of our employees was accused on social media of misconduct that is against our policies. As an organisation, we have a majority of women employees and are extremely conscious of and against the issues brought alive under #MeToo. Yesterday itself we initiated a conversation with our female employees (through other senior women employees) to see if any of them have faced any such issues in any way. None of them so far have raised any issues with any of our male or female employees. We are also investigating these particular complaints on social media but so far none of the women who have complained are working or have worked with WYP and Medulla or our affiliates in any way.”

Having said it all, the #MeToo movement continues to set the alarm bells ringing among the advertising folks in and around the country.

The “She was asking for it” collection from the Israeli brand Comme il…

The “She was asking for it” collection from the Israeli brand Comme il faut of clothing with slogans and remarks that link women clothing and rapes highlights the hypocrisy of people who relate rapes to clothing. No woman ask for sexual assault or rape. The advertisement very importantly takes the attitude of blaming the victims.

The Israeli brand comme-il-faut cleverly attacks all the people who make an absurd correlation between clothing and sexual assaults. The sarcasm with which they put slogans with each type of clothing is commendable. It highlights that women never invite rapists. No matter what they wear!

It is a thought provoking advertisement that shames everyone who links women clothing with rape. Gefen Team has managed to use creativity and sarcasm with simplicity to bring out a very sensitive yet important issue.

NO MORE, NFL and Grey Again team up To empower Super Bowl 50 viewers to learn the warning signs of domestic violence and sexual assault and how to help. NO MORE, the public awareness campaign designed to engage bystanders around ending domestic violence and sexual assault.

The 30-second ad, “Text Talk” was created by Grey New York. It shows a text conversation between friends. One woman is questioned about her well-being and the ad ends ominously with the thought bubble icon, suggesting something has gone wrong.

President Barack Obama said a “fundamental shift in our culture” is needed to prevent sexual assault and domestic violence.

“As far as we’ve come, the fact is that from sports leagues to pop culture to politics, our society still does not sufficiently value women,” Obama said as he unveiled a new campaign to raise awareness and prevent sexual assault on college and university campuses.
“We still don’t condemn sexual assault as loudly as we should,” he said. “We make excuses. We look the other way. The message that sends can have a chilling effect on our young women.”

Obama said. “It is on all of us to reject the quiet tolerance of sexual assault and to refuse to accept what’s unacceptable,”
