Spotify’s groundbreaking Spreadbeats campaign redefined B2B creativity by turning ordinary Excel spreadsheets into…

Spotify’s groundbreaking Spreadbeats campaign redefined B2B creativity by turning ordinary Excel spreadsheets into immersive music videos.

When people think about Spotify advertising, chances are their minds go straight to audio ads — the kind that pop up between songs or podcasts. But what if that assumption is limiting how media planners perceive the platform? What if Spotify’s potential as a multi-format ad powerhouse is being overlooked… simply because no one thought to look inside a spreadsheet?

That’s exactly the insight Spotify ran with in its wildly creative and unorthodox B2B campaign: Spreadbeats — a groundbreaking idea that turned Excel spreadsheets into fully functioning music videos, proving once and for all that Spotify is anything but audio-only.

Rethinking the Media Plan: The Birth of “Spreadbeats”

In the world of media planning, spreadsheets are sacred. They’re where million-dollar ad decisions are made. Spotify recognized this and saw an opportunity not just to insert itself into that conversation — but to completely reinvent it.

To show media buyers that Spotify’s video ad offerings were not only legitimate but more engaging than many of the usual suspects (think Google, Meta, YouTube, TikTok), the platform created something audacious. It didn’t just tell planners about its capabilities — it showed them, in the very format they live and breathe: Excel.

Turning Data into Art: A Music Video Inside a Spreadsheet

Partnering with Coachella headliner John Summit, Spotify transformed millions of data points into a stunning, four-minute Excel-based music video. The tab looked like an ordinary media plan at first glance. But once opened, the rows and columns came alive with vibrant visuals and immersive sound — an experience that was equal parts data and delight.

This wasn’t just a clever file embed or a flashy gimmick. The music video was entirely built from scratch using nothing but native Excel functions — think ASCII characters, Unicode, graphs, conditional formatting, and a whole lot of human creativity. No AI. No shortcuts. Just old-school digital wizardry reimagined for a new purpose.

Meet E7: A Story Told in Cells

At the heart of the video was a story — one that added emotional resonance to the technical brilliance. The narrative followed E7, a character born into a logical world of numbers and data. As she questions her place, she embarks on a visual journey of self-discovery, growing and evolving through increasingly complex, beautiful forms. The metaphor? Just like E7, Spotify Advertising is so much more than it first appears.

Personalized, Scalable, and Seamless for Sales Teams

To bring this idea into everyday sales conversations, Spotify equipped its team with a Spreadbeats Generator. This internal tool allowed sales reps to input personalized details — such as the client’s name, brand, and RFP specs — and generate a fully customized Excel file that included the media plan and the music video.

It was a seamless blend of functionality and storytelling — one that delivered a message right where planners were most receptive.

Campaign Objectives

The Spreadbeats campaign had clear goals:

Increase awareness of Spotify’s multi-format ad solutions

Drive consideration, brand relevance, and love among media planners

Challenge the perception of Spotify as just a digital audio platform

And in every category, it delivered.

The Results? Off the Charts.

By hacking the very platform media planners use daily, Spotify didn’t just make a statement — it sparked a movement. The numbers speak for themselves:

17:1 return on investment

+5,650% more email forwards than the B2B industry average

+870% ad engagement compared to previous paid campaigns

More importantly, it reshaped how advertisers perceive Spotify, positioning it as a creative, innovative, and highly effective channel for video as well as audio.

Why This Campaign Matters

The brilliance of Spreadbeats lies not just in the execution, but in the insight. Spotify identified a blind spot in its own brand perception and tackled it head-on — not with a conventional media buy or flashy keynote, but by meeting media planners exactly where they are and delivering an experience they couldn’t ignore.

It’s a bold reminder that the medium can be the message — and that sometimes, the most innovative ads don’t live in billboards, banners, or even video pre-rolls… they live in spreadsheets.

Final Takeaway

Spotify’s Spreadbeats campaign is a masterclass in creative B2B advertising. It combines deep audience insight, technical ingenuity, emotional storytelling, and flawless execution to break down misconceptions and open up new conversations.

For anyone in marketing, it’s a powerful case study on how to turn perceived weaknesses into creative gold — and how thinking inside the (spreadsheet) box can sometimes be the most radical move of all.

In 2022, a staggering number of over 105,000 girls aged 10 to 19…

In 2022, a staggering number of over 105,000 girls aged 10 to 19 gave birth in South Africa—a situation Amnesty International South Africa describes as a “crisis that cannot be ignored.” To address this pressing issue, Amnesty International South Africa, in partnership with Joe Public, launched the powerful #ScanTheScar campaign.

This initiative, in collaboration with Woman and Home and Bona magazines, sought to raise awareness about the harsh realities of child and teenage pregnancies. The print campaign encouraged readers to “scan the scar”—a striking image of a caesarean scar on a young girl’s abdomen, cleverly embedded with a Spotify code. When scanned, this code directed readers to a specially curated Spotify playlist that featured the authentic voices and stories of young girls who had experienced child and teenage pregnancies. These stories were brought to life with the help of organizations such as Children of Success and Women & Men Against Child Abuse. The narratives were powerfully conveyed by well-known female poets and artists, including Lebo Mashile, Koleka Putuma, and Thembe Mvula, who lent their voices to share the harrowing yet resilient experiences of these young girls.

“The crisis of child and teenage pregnancy cannot be ignored,” stated Shenilla Mohamed, Executive Director of Amnesty International South Africa. “The numbers of young girls giving birth are staggering, but we need to remember that these are not just numbers; they are real people. Our #ScanTheScar campaign gives a voice to these individuals. It is crucial for us to continue highlighting this crisis so that meaningful change can happen. This issue requires action from both the government and the people of South Africa. However, the state has a responsibility to create an enabling environment for the youth to make autonomous and informed decisions. They must support these young and adolescent girls in continuing their education so that they do not fall through the cracks.”

The #ScanTheScar campaign is not just about raising awareness; it is a call to action for society and the government to work together in addressing the root causes of child and teenage pregnancies. By giving a voice to those who have been affected, the campaign aims to foster a greater understanding of the challenges these young girls face and the importance of creating a supportive environment where they can thrive. This initiative highlights the urgent need for comprehensive education, accessible healthcare, and community support to ensure that young girls can make informed decisions about their futures and avoid the life-altering consequences of early motherhood.

A Song for Every CMO is Spotify’s playful way of celebrating the industry leaders

Spotify’s engagement levels are 23% higher than any other medium. Yet digital audio advertising earns under 2% of the total media spend. To kick start a conversation amongst key marketing decision-makers, A Song for Every CMO demonstrated Spotify’s targeting capabilities, using original songs written by leveraging Spotify’s data and dedicated to the world’s top CMO’s. It led to unprecedented results: 75% year-on-year growth and $ 1 billion in ad revenue for the first time, making 2021 the best year in Spotify’s Advertising history. It even inspired other CMOs to request songs of their own.

Won’t Wake The Baby Ads campaign by IKEA helped parents to prevent their babies from waking up to show that the retailer really understands how important sleep is?

White-noise playlists on Spotify are a go-to for parents who want to help their babies sleep. And the last thing they want to hear while their baby is sleeping is an obnoxious, loud ad. So IKEA and ad agency Rethink made targeted ads for sleep-deprived parents—ads designed to not wake the baby. For parents who were still awake, Rethink included whispered messages about IKEA products that might help them get a better night’s sleep.

The ads were part of the IKEA bedroom promotional event. Each Spotify ad linked directly to relevant IKEA bedroom products that could be shopped with a single tap.

The ads received a 164 percent increase in click-through rate compared to the standard Spotify rate.

AAMI Warning Spots created by Ogilvy for Suncorp There are too many avoidable…

AAMI Warning Spots created by Ogilvy for Suncorp

There are too many avoidable accidents on Australian roads. No one knows this better than AAMI, Australia’s leading motor insurance company. AAMI collects comprehensive data from thousands of road accidents across Australia every year into their annual AAMI Crash Index. They were sharing the locations of accident hotspots and major causes of accidents to make drivers aware of these dangers.

Brief: AAMI knows accident numbers spike over long weekends and holidays. The challenge was to create a road safety campaign to remind Australians to be extra careful, particularly around the most dangerous locations.

Objectives: Making our roads safer is at the heart of everything AAMI stands for. They thought it was time to put all our data to fair use, make our roads a little safer, and reduce the number of accidents over long weekends.

Idea: AAMI Warning Spots combine multiple data sources to deliver a world-first in road safety messages: Spotify ads using advanced geotargeting to pinpoint a driver’s precise location and alert them to a specific road hazard ahead. AAMI was able to do this after gathering data from thousands of accidents across Australia, plus additional data from government reports, news items, and other sources. This data allowed them to identify accident hotspots’ exact locations and determine the leading causes of these accidents. Spotify is Australia’s most popular music site, used by nearly 2.5 million people. This audience is almost exclusively listening to Spotify’s mobile app, with 60% of all users using the free ad-funded platform. Using Spotify’s advanced geotargeting, they pinpointed drivers’ precise location, matching this data with AAMI’s data to target drivers close to accident hotspots and warn them of oncoming dangers ahead.

Volvo Cars and Grey New York, have recreated the entire New York City…

Volvo Cars and Grey New York, have recreated the entire New York City Marathon experience in an audio poem to the city and its iconic sports event for runners worldwide.

The TCS New York City Marathon won’t be run in person this year, due to the pandemic, meaning thousands of runners from around the globe will not have the opportunity to participate in this challenge. Instead, runners will carry on the tradition, virtually training and racing in their hometowns and countries.

So, Volvo Cars created a custom playlist using real audio from the streets of the city. The playlist allows runners to immerse themselves in the sounds of 13 neighbourhoods along the NYC Marathon route, from Staten Island to Central Park. Listen to the playlist on Spotify:

“As the official vehicle and strategic sponsor of the TCS NY City Marathon, Volvo Cars wanted to support runners everywhere. So in partnership with Heard City, we brought the marathon route to life through ambient sound and music, available exclusively on Spotify, “said Nick Kaplan, Executive Creative Director of Grey New York. “This is an audio poem written by Volvo Cars to the marathon and the city of New York. It brings the joy of the race and the personality of each neighbourhood to life through sound.”

“The New York tri-state area has been home to Volvo Cars in the US for decades,” said, Anders Gustafsson, President and CEO of Volvo Car USA, “It’s our honour to salute the city and the spirit of those with the determination to run the NY City Marathon.”

The immersive audio experience is hosted by New York City and Boston Marathon winner, Meb Keflezighi, as well as local music artists. Keflezighi is the only person to win the New York City Marathon, Boston Marathon, and an Olympic medal.

Prejudice comes in all shapes and sizes. It grabs anything that stands away…

Prejudice comes in all shapes and sizes. It grabs anything that stands away from the so-called “normal” and drags it the hell down. A recent campaign by Durex boldly brings this sentiment to the forefront. Titled Durex The Unfuckables, it expresses how the society paints specially-abled-persons as individuals unfit for sex. However, that’s not all. The campaign not only lends a voice to such misrepresented individuals but makes them the stars of the project. Well, with Miami Ad School Madrid at the wheel, we wouldn’t have expected anything less. The creative presentation of the campaign’s message in the form of posters and social media videos is tongue-in-cheek and provocative yet rooted in honesty. However, the cherry on the top is the Spotify podcast that features disabled persons teaching the art of the sensual touch to the world. Collectively, The Unfuckables is a prosocial marketing marvel that doesn’t pull its punches. Well, it doesn’t need to anyway!

Pepsi Eat this playlist

This summer Spotify finally launched in Ukraine. We welcomed it with delicious playlists from Pepsi. You could get a recipe of traditional Ukrainian cuisine by reading each track-by-track listing. This approach combined Pepsi’s music background and their strategy of getting the food territory. Series of posters include musical dumplings, galushki, and famous Kyiv cutlet so while quarantine has made it difficult to taste Ukrainian cuisine, you can still listen to it.

The Uncensored Playlist Online press censorship is on the rise globally. Meaning that…

The Uncensored Playlist

Online press censorship is on the rise globally.

Meaning that in a large number of countries, people are unable to access many independent blogs and news sites, denying them their right to free information.

On the 12th of March: World Day Against Cyber Censorship, Reporters Without Borders Germany created a digital loophole to evade censorship.

Introducing: The Uncensored Playlist. While press freedom is not available in the worlds most oppressed societies – global music streaming sites are.

Five acclaimed independent journalists from five countries suffering from strict government censorship teamed up with Musical Director Lucas Mayer to turn 10 articles that had previously been censored into 10 uncensored pop songs. These songs were then uploaded onto freely available music streaming sites. Allowing these stories to be slipped back into the countries where they had once been forbidden.

For the very first time, reporters have become music artists to bring the truth to those that had once been denied it.

Join the fight! Get to know the brave journalists, the stories behind the songs, and share The Uncensored Playlist using our hashtag #truthfindsaway. Together we’ll show oppressive governments all over the world that they can’t silence freedom of information. No freedom without media freedom.

New York is home to some of the best street musicians in the world. But sometimes the hectic rhythm of the daily hustle doesn’t allow everyone to stop and appreciate the artists and talent among them. We join Spotify to present a collection of melodies, voices, and rhythms of all those street artists, which will be gathered on the platform so that everyone can listen to them as well as the possibility of sharing them and helping to make known to future artists.

Spotify Trojan Jammers – Switch to Spotify’s Daily Drive Playlist while commuting.

Americans love listening to the radio while driving. The task at hand is to make them switch to Spotify’s Daily Drive playlist which is a complete package including music, podcasts and news. We realised radio glitches and bad frequencies make people switch off the radio instantly. We’ll take advantage of this insight by creating Spotify’s Trojan Radio Jammers. A Trojan Radio Jammer is a low power radio station made out of a transmitter, an antenna and an audio source. So, we will take these jammers and jam the radio signals on some of the busiest streets in America. As it’s cheap and easy to make, we will place it in plain sight and drop hints to indicate it’s Spotify’s doing. Lastly, by using the old principles of radio, we will leave a direct radio message in favour of Spotify.

This project was created for One Show’s Young Ones Brief Awards.

Tramontina presents The Flavor of Songs: Spotify and JWT Brazil create the first…

Tramontina presents The Flavor of Songs: Spotify and JWT Brazil create the first synesthetic algorithm that transforms music into flavor

What does music taste like? J. Walter Thompson Brazil and Spotify are exploring this question by launching a new campaign called the Flavor of Songs for Brazilian cookware brand Tramontina. The project is driven by an algorithm that can turn any song from the Spotify platform into a different recipe – and which is capable of generating 44 million possible gastronomic combinations. The concept is based on synesthesia, the phenomenon where the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to a similar experience in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. One sense involuntarily influences the other. In this case, sound informs taste.

The Flavor of Songs is the culmination of a six-month-long study, where Tramontina – one of Brazil’s leading brands of cooking utensils—Spotify and J. Walter Thompson Brazil brought together neuroscientist Dr. Marcelo Costa, Head of the Neuroscience Department at the University of São Paulo, conductor João Rocha from the University of Kentucky, and Renato Carioni, chef and coach of team Brazil in the Bocuse d’Or, to give flavor to songs and create a dish for each of them.

With the aim of using innovation and pop culture to inspire people to cook more – showing that stainless steel is much more than just pots and pans.

How does it work?
The six-month process started with neuroscientist Dr. Marcelo Costa and conductor João Rocha. They used the principle of synesthesia to classify the millions of songs available in Spotify’s database. “If you consider a samba school with its various instruments, that really dense part in terms of sound, you can relate that to dense food,” explains Rocha. Thus, Spotify’s parameters became ingredients; dance music was associated with temperature; energy as density/texture; positivity became bitterness/acidity, and musical notes became harmonization.

Based on these parameters, Chef Renato Carioni classified all the main culinary ingredients by assigning notes to each one of them. “If a song is not at all positive, its taste is bitter,” says Carioni.

This entire database was put together and originated an artificial intelligence that has the same technology used in financial systems, to “match” Spotify’s classification parameters and the different combinations of ingredients cataloged by Carioni. Thus, it was possible to come up with different dishes. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, for example, became a Foie Gras Terrine with Salmon caviar and Cold Barley.

“Our brief was from Tramontina was to appeal to a younger and more techy audience and get them excited by its stainless-steel line of products. We didn’t shy away from a technologically complex route, which has resulted in a project that appeals to all senses.” says Rodrigo Da Matta, ECD at J. Walter Thompson Brazil.

The campaign is featured on Spotify, via display banners and audio spots, always with a simple message: if this song had a flavor, what would be? And via a website which gives not only the gastronomic match for each song but also the ingredients, the cookware and the entire recipe, divided into simple and clear steps, so that the user can cook it at home. All that users have to do is log in with their Spotify account, type the name of the song or artist they want to discover the flavor, choose the track and see the result.

War Child, on the International Day of Peace, launched Warcast.

It’s a podcast, made in association with a singer-songwriter, Damien Rice and Spotify that brings an unheard, hair-raising war story of little Jasmine from Aleppo, Syria to life! ‘Being There’ is the agency behind this short 3D-audio documentary podcast.

The audio and storytelling premise of this podcast gives the listener an unbelievable three-dimensional experience. As a listener, you see and feel everything that Jasmine felt when she had to flee the war-struck Syria and had to endure an unbearable trauma (which she is still coping) amidst the pitch Black Sea – a journey from hell to hope.

Through Warcast, War Child’s aim is to make people around the world realize the ordeal kids have to put up with in war-prone landscapes; some of which who despite after surviving it all cannot adjust to their new surroundings in new countries. It’s because the war continues to haunt them. It’s War Child’s appeal to the world to help these kids with development aid because while the war is over for them physically, mentally it’s still on.

The Irish singer-songwriter, Damien Rice has also recorded 3 songs in 3D, all of which make these unheard stories all the more immersive and chilling. Moreover, the sound effects and brilliant storytelling are so communicable that they at once grab you by the throat and leave you punch-drunk with mouth agape.
