X3M Ideas: History has been selective on the outstanding achievements of African women. They are remembered for lesser achievements and not for the ones that position them at par with men. For International Women’s Day, we are making history equal for women.

Rise for Good: No Eye in Justice – In Jordan, more than half…

Rise for Good: No Eye in Justice – In Jordan, more than half of the women are subject to violence every year. Rise for Good singled out the tragic story of Fatima.

Fatima is a Jordanian mother of three who had been a victim of domestic abuse by her husband who gouged both her eyes out in front of her children. Sadly, she lost her eyesight permanently that terrorizing night.

For this campaign, brand wanted to break the silence by creating an honest conversation around the topic, and finally witnessed an outbreak in this conservative society.

Jordan is a very socially conservative and religious country that’s run by men. More often than not, women are silenced and have limited roles in society.

When it comes to violence against women, there are legal loopholes that unfortunately rule in favour of men, and due to societal pressures, the media neglects to publicize this sensitive, subject.

In Arabic much like in English, you cannot spell “justice” without the letter “i” which has the same exact phonetics as the word “Eye”. And thus, the word عدالة when missing the letter “ع would be meaningless justice does not exist without the “eye”, a message that links back to Fatima’s tragic story. The only way to empower the Fatimas in our community was to let them know that we “see” them and we will not stand idle. Our message was clear: Until women can look justice in the eye, the “I” of justice will fall.

Women Moving Millions: With equal funding, we can ensure equal rights, equal pay…

Women Moving Millions: With equal funding, we can ensure equal rights, equal pay and equal power.
Give Bold. #GetEqual

The current pandemic threatens to reverse the progress made to improve the safety, health, and opportunity for women around the world, especially for women of color.

The stakes for gender equality have never been higher. The call for leadership has never been louder.

Together we have the creativity, connections, and resources to champion the cause and lead the change. By closing the funding gap, we can take action to address the systemic and cultural barriers to equality that continue to affect the lives of millions of women globally.

When the Lebanese government failed to find solutions to the looming economic crisis,…

When the Lebanese government failed to find solutions to the looming economic crisis, stagnant economy and unemployment, the country was plunged into the 6th revolution in its history. However, in a country where women don’t have equal rights and face massive underrepresentation in the government, women for the very first time took the lead. They turned it into the first-ever peaceful revolution. This show of strength helped ensure a whopping 400% increase in female representation in the new cabinet. However, while this bold act of defiance and leadership was lauded by most of Lebanon, many trivialized their actions and criticized women for speaking up, staying out on the streets late into the night, and more. An-Nahar, Lebanon’s leading newspaper, a staunch proponent of women’s rights, wanted to show its support for these women and inject new life into the movement.

Women faced innumerable injustices in Lebanon, whether legally or illegally- ranging from one of the worlds largest pay gaps to the inability to pass down their nationality to their children. While known to be outspoken and thought leaders, women don’t have equal rights and face massive underrepresentation in the government. When Lebanon was plunged into the 6th revolution in its history, women who feared that the protests would turn violent, led the movement and turned it into Lebanon’s first-ever peaceful revolution. This resulted in a 400% increase in female representation in the new cabinet. However, this also had another effect. While most of Lebanon lauded the effort, the patriarchy condemned it and criticized women heavily for their actions. Their good deeds and efforts were trivialized, and their actions were mocked stereotypically. We found countless posts on social media sites that reflected the patriarchal mindset entrenched in Lebanese culture, such as “Women shouldn’t stay out late”, “Women talk too much” and “Women should know their place”. We took these sexist statements and turned them into a plucky and powerful print and outdoor campaign by juxtaposing them with raw, real photos of women leading the revolution. The messaging went on to turn the stereotypical criticisms made by men, into positive, and inspiring pieces of communication. Each ad ended with a reminder – that the movement led by women had ensured a 400% increase in women’s representation in the cabinet.

We released three pieces of communication that addressed three stereotypical criticisms of women found online – “Woman talk too much”, “Girls should not stay out late” and “Women should know their place”. We took these sexist statements and turned them into a plucky and powerful print and outdoor campaign by juxtaposing them with raw, real photos of women leading the revolution, taken by some of Lebanon’s leading photographers. The communication was released under the ‘Naharouki’ banner, which means ‘your day’, when read by a woman, and was derived by making a minor tweak in the newspaper’s name ‘An Nahar’. The ‘ads’ were also designed like news articles with controversial headlines, ensuring that they were impossible to miss.

The campaign injected a new sense of purpose into the movement. It was also organically used as a means to respond to comments that were critical of women. Women’s groups celebrated it and lavished praise on An-Nahar for standing with women. With the campaign, An-Nahar once again solidified its reputation as a publication that always looks to empower women.

Virtual assistants are increasingly present in people’s lives, helping clear doubts and making…

Virtual assistants are increasingly present in people’s lives, helping clear doubts and making everyday life easier. What they all have in common is a standard female voice and a woman’s name, such as Lu, Siri, Alexa, Nat, Bia, etc. According to a study released in May 2019 by UNESCO called ‘I’d Blush If I Could,’ virtual AI assistants have been suffering verbal harassment of a sexual nature, to which they usually respond with tolerant, subservient and passive remarks. The ‘#HeyUpdateMyVoice’ movement, in partnership with UNESCO, was born out of this context with the goal of teaching respect towards virtual assistants and, in addition, asking tech companies to update their assistants’ responses. Because if that happens to them, imagine what happens in real life to real women. The movement and campaign were created and developed by SunsetDDB in Brazilan agency part of DDB Latina

The movement

“In order to contribute to better education of current and future generations, the movement “Hey, Update My Voice” was created.
A non-branded movement for every brand: women’s rights institutions and company using virtual assistants.

Our goal is to ask the leading Silicon Valley companies to update the responses of their virtual assistants. So that they are no longer subservient and passive, and that they have an active voice and give serious and educational responses when they suffer any kind of harassment.”

Menstruation, much to our surprise and delight, has today gained centre stage in…

Menstruation, much to our surprise and delight, has today gained centre stage in many of our discussions. Part of this can be attributed to the rising awareness through various mediums, specially the much talked about Bollywood film Padman. This seems the apt time for marketers to gain advantage of the momentum and P&G’s Whisper is striking the metal while it’s hot.

Whisper India’s new all-digital campaign #BreakTheSilence is all about breaking the taboos and stigmas surrounding periods. The campaign, designed by Leo Burnett India, was flagged off by a video ad released on all social media platforms which included Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube among others. The ad talks about the experience of girls’ first period stories and the turmoil they had to go through. It features a self-made Whisper anthem to the tunes of “Mann Mei Hai Vishwas” with lyrics reiterating the advantages of using a Whisper pad over items like cloth. The video is powerful and shows that no girl is standing alone in the fight against period struggles.

Apart from this, stand-up comic Mallika Dua has been taking an active part in the campaign by sharing, via her social media handles, various contests and posts that urge girls to come forward and tell their story. Whisper has always been vocal about women’s issues, especially period stigmas. Their campaign #TouchThePickle was a landmark in their advertising supporting the demolition of menstruation taboos. They have tried to carry forward the same legacy, this time with digital. We hope it charts out the same course and not only helps in popularizing the brand, but also succeeds in making people aware about this noble cause.

The “She was asking for it” collection from the Israeli brand Comme il…

The “She was asking for it” collection from the Israeli brand Comme il faut of clothing with slogans and remarks that link women clothing and rapes highlights the hypocrisy of people who relate rapes to clothing. No woman ask for sexual assault or rape. The advertisement very importantly takes the attitude of blaming the victims.

The Israeli brand comme-il-faut cleverly attacks all the people who make an absurd correlation between clothing and sexual assaults. The sarcasm with which they put slogans with each type of clothing is commendable. It highlights that women never invite rapists. No matter what they wear!

It is a thought provoking advertisement that shames everyone who links women clothing with rape. Gefen Team has managed to use creativity and sarcasm with simplicity to bring out a very sensitive yet important issue.
