PhonePe 10 Years Campaign Attempts the Longest Thank-You Ever

PhonePe 10 Years campaign featuring Shahu Supreme naming 70 crore users

PhonePe is marking its 10th anniversary with a simple question: what would it take to thank more than 70 crore people, one by one? Its answer is an almost impossible roll call featuring Shahu Supreme, the fast-speaking record holder who attempts to name PhonePe users at his maximum speed.

The campaign, “10 Years of Unlocking Progress for 70 Crore Indians,” was conceptualised in partnership with Ogilvy. Instead of making the anniversary about another collection of corporate milestones, the film puts the people behind the number at the centre.

The number becomes the idea

“70 crore users” is the kind of figure that is difficult to picture. The campaign finds a physical way to make that scale understandable.

Shahu Supreme can speak at 494 words per minute. PhonePe gives him the job of calling out its users by name. Even at that speed, the film points out that naming all 70 crore users would take 980 consecutive days.

That calculation does most of the storytelling. A huge user-base statistic suddenly becomes a task that audiences can imagine. Two years and eight months of uninterrupted speaking is a very different way of understanding 70 crore.

A milestone built around people

The film uses the challenge to shift the anniversary conversation away from PhonePe itself.

The people being counted become the reason for the celebration. PhonePe’s own communication around the campaign describes the last decade through everyday moments, from a first digital payment to the first customer for a growing business.

That makes the 70 crore figure more than a business statistic. Every number represents a person who has used the platform during its 10-year journey.

The creative idea works because it does not need to explain the scale at length. The task explains it for the brand.

When data becomes a creative device

Large user numbers usually appear in advertising as proof points. Here, the number drives the entire execution.

The choice of a speed speaker gives the statistic a benchmark. If even someone capable of speaking 494 words every minute would need 980 days, the size of the audience becomes easier to grasp.

Ogilvy’s Akshay Seth described the thinking as a way of looking at the people behind the 70 crore figure rather than treating the number as the complete story.

The result is an anniversary film with a very specific visual and verbal hook: try to name everyone.

And the obvious problem is that you cannot.

That impossibility is what gives the idea its scale.

A thank-you that cannot be completed

PhonePe’s 10-year campaign does not attempt to literally represent 70 crore users on screen. Instead, it finds one person capable of demonstrating why the number is so large.

The campaign turns a milestone into a human-sized challenge. Rather than counting transactions or listing achievements, it asks audiences to think about the individual names behind the total.

For a digital payments brand, that is a fitting way to mark a decade: use the data the business has accumulated, then turn that data into the creative idea itself.
